A 59-year-old man from Paphos, Panikos Kalaintzis, died in the early hours at Larnaca General Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment in the cardiology ward under police guard.
Police said he had been in custody since 11 March 2026 as part of an investigation into a suspected case of obtaining credit through false representations. He was arrested the same day under a court warrant.
Because of health issues, he was transferred to hospital and remained there for treatment. On 12 March, the Larnaca District Court, sitting at the hospital, issued a six-day detention order.
The exact cause of death is now under investigation by Larnaca CID, with authorities awaiting the outcome of the inquiry to clarify all circumstances of the case.
