George Vasiliou’s Farewell: A President Remembered

The Church of Holy Wisdom in Nicosia was small on the morning of Saturday, January 17. Family, friends, colleagues, and former political opponents gathered to say goodbye to George Vasiliou, the third President of the Republic of Cyprus.

The funeral service was held with honors fitting for a sitting President and at public expense. It was attended by President Nikos Christodoulides, the entire Cabinet, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, and leaders from state, politics, the church, and military.

Former colleagues and political rivals of the deceased were also there, along with academics, writers, and many citizens who wanted to honor a President who made a lasting impact on the country’s public life, despite political differences.

The funeral service was led by Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus. Eulogies were given by President Nikos Christodoulides, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, Rector of the University of Cyprus Tasos Christofides, Michalis Papapetrou on behalf of his colleagues, and his son Evelthon Vasiliou for the family.

All speakers shared their respect and admiration for George Vasiliou’s career, highlighting his commitment to dialogue, democracy, and finding solutions through understanding during tough times.

The former President’s family was deeply moved as they stood with dignity for their final farewell. His wife Androulla Vasiliou and their children Sophia, Evelthon, and Vasso showed their tears but remained composed. They said goodbye to their loved one who left a unique mark on Cyprus’s history.

The funeral was also attended by Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, who came to offer condolences to the Vasiliou family before leaving. Former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat was also present to express his condolences.

After the ceremony ended, George Vasiliou was laid to rest with deep emotion and respect.
