Katerina Christofi: Journey to Jordan, from Amman to Petra and the Wadi Rum desert.

The travel blogger and journalist from OLOI MEDIA, Katerina Christofi, traveled to Jordan and discovered that the most ‘misunderstood’ destinations are the ones that change you the most.
Hello! I’m Katerina from @Travel_Escapers_, and together with Christos, we travel not to check off places but to live experiences.
When we announced our trip to Jordan, almost everyone said the same thing:
“Jordan? Is it safe?” And that’s how we started. With two backpacks, an open mind, and a total budget of €500 per person for a four-day trip full of history, desert, spirituality, and moments that don’t easily fit into stories.
Why Jordan?
Jordan is not a ‘relaxing vacation’ destination.
It’s not a resort or easy travel. But it is:
- ancient civilizations
- Biblical history
- impressive landscapes
- and people who make you feel welcome
Day 1: Arrival in Amman – Chaos, life, and authenticity
We flew from Paphos to Amman with only backpacks, which made the journey more comfortable (and freer).
Amman is a city that doesn’t try to please you — it just is itself. Noise, smells, movement, life.
What to do in Amman:
- Walk through the souks and observe the locals
- Try street food (falafel, shawarma, hummus)
- Visit the Amman Citadel for views
- Stop by the Roman Theater
And somewhere here… a falafel and a life lesson
In the city center, we sat down to eat falafel worth €1.
No exaggeration: I’ve never had such falafel in my life. Fresh, hot, made right in front of us at that moment.
And while we were eating, a police van parked next to us. Four or five officers got out.
For a second you freeze — it’s human.
But then… neighborhood kids run up to them to hug them.
And one officer bends down and gently kisses their little hand.
This image says a lot.
It shows a people who trust their authorities, who don’t fear the police but see them as security.
In Cyprus, many times we see police and turn away. There, children ran towards them.
These are moments that don’t show up in photos — but stay forever.
Day 2: Mount Nebo, Jordan River & Dead Sea

To see many places without stress, we hired a private guide for 2 days (€230 total) — and it was one of our best decisions.
Mount Nebo
One of the most important religious sites in the country.
According to the Bible, this is where Moses saw the Promised Land.
Tip: Go early for fewer crowds and better light.
Jordan River
The site where Jesus Christ was baptized.
Quiet, spiritual, without noise — it automatically makes you lower your tone.
Dead Sea
- The water is extremely salty
- You can’t sink
- If you have a wound, you’ll feel it
Advice:If possible, choose a hotel with access to clean beaches & mud baths.Karak CastleA medieval castle with underground tunnels and heavy history.
Ideal for those who love castles and the old-world feel.
Day 3: Petra – The Rose City
Petra is one of those places that can’t be easily described.
It’s not just the Treasury — it’s the whole journey there.
What to do in Petra:
- Walk through the Siq without rushing
Climb up to the Monastery (Ad-Deir)
Discover smaller tombs
Just sit and observe
Practical tips:
- Comfortable shoes (very comfortable)
Plenty of water
Hat
Patience
Petra is not a stop. It’s an experience that tires you — but rewards you.
Wadi Rum – The Valley of the Moon
Wadi Rum is silence. And this silence does good.
What you can do in Wadi Rum:
- 4×4 desert tours
Camel rides
Overnight stay in Bedouin camp
Stargazing (one of the best in the world)
The Bedouins treated us to tea and talked about their lives. Without exaggerations or filters.
There you understand that sometimes nothing needs to happen for everything to be perfect.
