There’s a country where time feels like it’s standing still — where Roman emperors walked the same cobblestones, waterfalls sing through green forests, and medieval walls meet the sparkling blue Adriatic Sea. This country is Croatia: a place that looks like a postcard but feels like a living dream.

I am Katerina from @Travel_Escapers_. In this guide, we take you on a heartfelt journey to the heart of Croatia — from the grand walls of Dubrovnik, to the lively Roman palace of Split, the charming town of Trogir, the vibrant capital Zagreb, and, of course, the magical Plitvice Lakes.

Each stop has its own story; together they create a beautiful mix of history, nature, and pure magic.

If you’re planning your first (or next) trip to Croatia, let our experiences inspire you. Here you’ll find everything we loved, plus handy tips to make your journey unforgettable.

Watch our video here:

1. Dubrovnik: The Pearl of the Adriatic

Our journey started in Dubrovnik — what an amazing start! From the moment you see the iconic orange roofs surrounded by huge stone walls, you feel like you’re in another world.

But Dubrovnik is more than just beauty; it’s history in motion. For centuries, this small city was one of the most advanced maritime republics in the world, even competing with Venice. It had its own fleet, extensive trade networks, and one of Europe’s oldest pharmacies still in operation (since 1317 — incredible!).

We spent hours walking along the city’s famous walls, with ancient towers on one side and the vast Adriatic on the other. Every corner tells stories of merchants, sailors, and people who built this city stone by stone.

A fan of Game of Thrones? Yes, this is where King’s Landing comes to life. But trust us — reality is even more magical.

Quick tips for Dubrovnik:

  1. Walk the walls early in the morning or at sunset for fewer crowds and beautiful light.
  2. Don’t miss the view from Mount Srđ (the cable car ride is worth it).
  3. If you can, stay inside the Old Town for a full experience.

2. Split: Living Inside a Roman Emperor’s Palace

The next stop was Split, a lively city built right inside Roman Emperor Diocletian’s palace from 305 AD. Over 1,700 years later, the palace isn’t just a museum; it’s part of daily life.

People live here, shops and restaurants are nestled within ancient marble walls, and the whole place buzzes with energy. Enjoy coffee among Roman columns or dinner in former imperial rooms — it feels almost surreal. History isn’t behind glass; it’s everywhere around you.

Pro tip: Try fresh seafood and definitely a banana split (we had a fun debate over who would eat it!). The seaside Riva is perfect for a sunset walk.

3. Trogir: Croatia’s Hidden Romantic Secret

A short distance from Split lies Trogir — a tiny island town often missed but simply enchanting. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns.

You’ll find Venetian architecture, narrow alleys, stone bridges connecting the island to the mainland, and a peaceful vibe that makes you forget time. We loved wandering its streets, climbing to viewpoints, and soaking up its romantic atmosphere.

A bonus: Scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed here too.

Why visit Trogir?: It’s perfect for a relaxed half-day or an overnight stay if you want charm without crowds.

4. Zagreb: The Capital with Soul

Away from the coast, we headed north to Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. This city is both elegant and youthful, with Austro-Hungarian buildings, cozy cafes, and a lively artistic scene.
