New rules for fines on red light violations at photo-monitored intersections start today, March 6.
The Police say these changes come from a decision by the Council of Ministers. This was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic under Law 91(I)/2024 and does not apply retroactively.
The new rules set different fines based on how serious the violation is, as recorded by the Photo Monitoring System.
If you violate the mandatory stop line at a photo-monitored intersection, you’ll get a fine of 25 euros.
For red light violations:
- If your vehicle enters the pedestrian crossing where one exists, the fine is 85 euros and you get 3 penalty points.
- If your vehicle goes beyond the pedestrian crossing, the fine is 300 euros and you also get 3 penalty points.
- If there are no pedestrian crossings and your vehicle crosses the white stop line into the junction area, it’s also a 300 euro fine with 3 penalty points.
