When chatting with folks in sports management, many think we shouldn’t call foreign businessmen running Cypriot teams investors.
We see it differently. We believe they deserve that title.
Take the guy who took over Aris football club about five years ago (early 2021), Belarusian Nick. He has not only improved the team but also made smart investments.
Under Babika’s leadership, the team’s scouting network has found several players that most people didn’t know about. They later sold these players abroad for big bucks.
The Gabonese forward, for example, came to Cyprus in summer 2021, earning 6-7 thousand a month (his yearly salary was 60-70 thousand euros).
In January 2024, he moved to French Toulouse for 2.8 million euros. Last summer, the 25-year-old winger was sold by the French team to Red Star for 4 million euros. Aris got a percentage from this new “deal.”
Just a reminder: last summer, three more key players—Struski, Boakye, and Bengtsson—were sold to foreign teams. Three months earlier, Zakaria Savo was transferred to Swedish Djurgården for 1.4 million euros.
So, is the owner of Aris Limassol’s management company really an investor or not?
