What do Ferrington Zandi, Gaston Sangoy, and Gaetan Weissbeck have in common?
Besides wearing the Apollon jersey, they all scored directly from a corner kick for the Limassol team.
This is pretty rare, but Apollon fans have cheered for such goals three times in the last 18 years.
The first was by the German-Iranian player during the 2006-07 season. On January 28, 2007, in the 18th round of the championship, Zandi scored in the 67th minute with a direct corner kick. This made it the second goal for the ‘blue and whites’ in their 2-1 win over Aris, who were technically the home team.
Three years and one month later (27/02/2010), at Tsirion Stadium, another goal was scored this way. This time it was Gaston Sangoy. The clever player scored Apollon’s third goal in the 50th minute during a 4-0 victory over APEP in the 23rd round of the championship. Again, Apollon was technically the away team since Pitsilia’s team was officially hosting.
The good luck continued for the ‘blue and whites’ in Sunday’s derby between AEL and Apollon. This derby took place at Alphamega Stadium, with the ‘yellow-blues’ being technically the home team. Gaetan Weissbeck scored directly from a corner in the 61st minute, making it 2-1 and helping his team come back to secure a draw.
In the match on November 30, 2025, both teams ended in a 2-2 draw. It was the first time Apollon didn’t celebrate a win even though a player scored directly from a corner.
On another note, they also didn’t lose any of these matches, playing all three as technically away games in Limassol against three different teams from Limassol District: Aris, APEP, and AEL.
