Mavrokolympos Dam Reaches 15% Capacity After Repairs

The Mavrokolympos Dam in the Pegeia area is bringing hope again after a tough year. The dam had to be fully emptied last Christmas for repairs due to serious damage. Now, it has collected over 115,000 cubic meters of water in its reservoir since returning to normal about two months ago. It currently stands at 15% capacity.

While Mavrokolympos isn’t the biggest dam around, it’s vital for Paphos’s agriculture. It mainly supplies irrigation water to farmers in low western Paphos. The recent water flows are a blessing for banana producers and other farmers who faced their worst times in 2025 due to drought and damage.

Officials explain that the current 15% capacity of Mavrokolympos is not just from rainwater that has fallen in Paphos recently, but also from extra desalinated water from the Asprokremmos plant.

Still, local stakeholders say seeing Mavrokolympos filled with water again is a big reason to feel optimistic.

In addition to the 115,000 cubic meters added to Mavrokolympos from the recent three-day rainfall, the Water Department’s report shows that the Asprokremmos dam only received 40,000 cubic meters. Meanwhile, Arminou, which sends water to the southern pipeline, got 48,000 cubic meters. The Evretou dam received 18,000 cubic meters, Kannaviou got 10,000 cubic meters, Agia Marina Chrysochous received eight thousand, and the Pomos dam got two thousand.

The Argaka dam is the only one showing no flow during this three-day period in Paphos province.
