The European Commission has given the green light to Meta’s new advertising model. This model will use less personal data in a ‘consent or pay’ system starting next month. With this approval, Meta dodges daily fines while Europe tightens rules on tech giants, even with pushback from Washington.

The company is in talks with European antitrust officials after getting hit with a 200 million euro fine in April for breaking digital market laws. This issue involved Facebook and Instagram from November 2023 to November 2024, before Meta made changes to reduce data used for ad targeting.

EU regulators are now checking the updates made to how options are presented to users. While Meta plans to keep its main idea intact, the Commission noted the latest version avoids mentioning possible fines. According to the announcement, users will clearly choose between sharing all their data for personalized ads or using much less data for a simpler ad experience.
