This year’s holidays are not limited to land, as divers from around the world bring the Christmas spirit beneath the sea’s surface.
From the impressive aquariums of Brazil and South Korea to the crystal-clear waters of Cyprus, underwater ‘Santas’ steal the show. The Christmas spirit travels beneath the sea’s surface in various parts of the world. In Brazil, at the AquaRio aquarium in Rio de Janeiro, children watch Santa swim among sharks, while in aquariums in South Korea and other countries, divers dress festively and offer unique spectacles to visitors.
However, in Cyprus, this scene is not just an impressive snapshot. Christmas in Cyprus has learned to break away from the ordinary. And in Protaras, this is proven once again, with the Christmas tree decorated not in a square or hotel, but on the sea floor. This image no longer surprises locals, as it’s not the first time divers keep this unique tradition alive.
The initiative started from the SCUBA Dive Cyprus training center with support from the Municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia and carries the slogan “Protaras: The Endless Summer.” The project aims to show that the area can offer unique experiences all year round, not just during summer.
