AKEL is calling for the quick suspension of Mayor Christos Zannetos of Ayia Napa. He faces charges in the Criminal Court for forgery and fraud related to European funds.
The party also notes that, after some delay, two other mayors under investigation for serious crimes have been suspended. They stress the need for institutions to work properly to ensure transparency and accountability among political figures.

“To tackle the decay hurting our country, institutions must start functioning. We need to fight corruption and decay by activating laws and procedures. Every complaint and allegation against political figures and state officials must be investigated thoroughly.
We point out that, although there was a delay, the two mayors under investigation for serious crimes like rape and domestic violence have finally been suspended. At the same time, we stress that it is unacceptable for another DISY mayor, Christos Zannetos of Ayia Napa, who faces charges in the Criminal Court for forgery and fraud related to European funds, to remain unsuspended.
The big issue remains the Presidential Palace and the Attorney General’s Office. We still haven’t seen answers or accountability regarding the videogate from the Presidential Palace. The donors to the First Lady’s Fund are still a secret. The report on corruption in KOP has stalled at the Attorney General’s Office. If those in power think these problems will be forgotten or hidden, they should know that AKEL and most of society will oppose them.
