It is with great sadness that the Department of Archaeology announces the passing of Professor Nikos Efstratiou on December 20, 2025. He was a top expert in prehistoric archaeology, focusing on Minoan and Mycenaean archaeology, Neolithic Greece, Cypriot Prehistory, and Ethnoarchaeology.

Professor Efstratiou made a big impact in Cyprus through his research and excavations in the island’s mountainous areas. His work revealed important details about early human life on the island, especially during the Epipaleolithic and Aceramic Neolithic periods.

The Directorate and staff of the Department of Antiquities send their deepest condolences to his family and friends. His loss creates an irreplaceable gap in the scientific community.
