Artist George Gabriel is making headlines with his works that spark debates about offending the divine. This situation is new and unique, but he feels free to express himself artistically. His aim is freedom of expression, not to upset anyone.
In his honest interview with OLOI and George Pavlidis, he explains that he doesn’t want to offend faith or religious symbols. Instead, he wants to shed light on hypocrisy, corruption, and social issues that affect important institutions. His art includes elements from Byzantine traditions, even though some accuse him of mocking Christ. He clarifies: “Christ can descend to earth in human form,” which is something taught in schools.
He points out that anyone can view his work, and anyone can choose to censor it. A piece of art can share its message without splitting society apart. However, in a European country, some exhibitions are shut down due to censorship, raising concerns about artistic freedom.
