The trial of two monks from Avvakoum Monastery, facing 24 serious charges of financial crimes, has been postponed once again. The next hearing is set for 27 May 2026.
The prosecution requested time to jointly explore with the defence the possibility of narrowing evidence and reaching agreement on undisputed facts. The body of evidence was described as ‘particularly voluminous’, making pre-trial negotiations essential.
The defence reserved its position on accepting the proposals, leaving open the path to either convergence or a full trial.
Simultaneously, the court granted a request to ease bail conditions: monks Nektarios and Porfyrios will now sign in at Agios Dometios police station once a week — every Thursday between 08:00 and 20:00 — instead of twice weekly as before.
The charges against the two monks include conspiracy to defraud, forgery, theft by an agent, unlawful possession of assets exceeding €63,000, money laundering, interference with judicial proceedings, and filing a false tax return. Both deny any involvement.
