A chemical compound used mainly in industry as a solvent seems to be the liquid found in a water cooler. It is linked to the death of a 78-year-old and has sent four others to the hospital in Larnaca.

According to KYPE, the substance is GBL (gamma-Butyrolactone), which strongly affects the human nervous system. When ingested, it turns into GHB, a depressant that can cause loss of consciousness, breathing problems, and even death, especially in overdose cases. Police sources say that, based on findings from the State Laboratory, they are now investigating how this substance got into the cooler from which the water was drunk.

Meanwhile, they are gathering testimonies from family and friends of those affected, who were at the house during the incident. So far, according to the Police, no one else has been found to have consumed water from that cooler, besides the four who are hospitalized.

As for possible criminal activity, sources say this is a very sensitive case, which will be carefully assessed based on scientific evidence and lab tests. They are not ruling out any possibilities at this point. Experts also mention that treating a GBL overdose is tough since it impacts several vital systems in the body, making quick medical help essential.
