One of the most advanced ships in the Spanish fleet, the frigate Cristóbal Colón (“Christopher Columbus”), is set to dock in Cyprus as part of the reinforcement of the European presence in the region due to the escalation of the crisis in the Middle East.

The ship belongs to the Álvaro de Bazán class and features the Aegis system—the same advanced radar and guided-missile system carried by American destroyers—offering strong anti-missile defense and the capability to intercept multiple threats simultaneously, from drones to ballistic missiles.

The Cristóbal Colón will first dock in Crete, highlighting Greece’s role as a central support hub for the EU naval force, while its mission is being coordinated with forces from France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom for the protection of Cyprus and the enhancement of security in the region.
