The European Commission, through its Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), has already coordinated six repatriation flights from the Middle East over two days to return EU citizens safely.
So far, the flights have supported returns to Bulgaria, Italy, Austria and Slovakia. Additional operations are planned in the coming days as more member states request assistance.
Cyprus is among the countries that have activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, alongside Greece, France, Belgium, Romania, Luxembourg and Czechia.
The Commission says it can co-finance up to 75% of eligible flight costs when at least 30% of seats are offered to citizens from other EU member states. If no member state can support an evacuation request, rescEU can be used with funding of up to 100% of costs.
EU authorities say they remain in close contact with national and consular services to facilitate the safe return of citizens stranded in the region.
