The Cyprus Consumer Association stresses the need for better market control. They point out that 87% of recalled or banned products are still online.
This comes as we approach World Consumer Day on March 15, which this year focuses on product safety and protecting consumers from harmful goods.
A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development shows that in 2025, there were 4,671 warnings in the European Safety Gate system. This is a 13% rise from 2024 and more than double since 2022.
During this time, national authorities took 5,794 enforcement actions, a 35% increase from the previous year. These numbers show better system effectiveness and cooperation among EU and EEA authorities.
The Association emphasizes that product safety is a basic consumer right. They call for more involvement from consumer organizations in shaping market policies.
They also stress the need for better teamwork between governments, businesses, and consumer groups. Plus, they want cross-border control systems and unified international standards to protect consumers.
