The Administrative Court agreed with the Administration’s choice to label a Russian national as a prohibited immigrant. They also turned down his request for international protection, saying his deportation to Russia is legal.
A statement from the Legal Service said the Administrative Court backed the Republic’s decision to declare the Russian national a prohibited immigrant and approved his deportation. The applicant entered the country illegally through occupied areas and was caught at the Ledra checkpoint. He was wanted by Russian authorities for terrorism charges.
While waiting for his extradition process, he asked for international protection, but the Asylum Service denied it. Detention and deportation orders were issued because of his illegal stay and the threat to public order and safety. The Court pointed out that a later asylum application does not give an automatic right to stay. The applicant did not show he would be in danger if sent back to Russia, confirming the legality of the decision. Attorney Katia Hadjidimitriou represented the Attorney General in this case.
