The process before the Supreme Court regarding the Legal Service’s request to lift the parliamentary immunity of Nikos Sykas, related to an assault complaint by his partner, which has been withdrawn, has concluded.
The MP appeared again before the Court on Thursday (15/1), with the complainant stating in an affidavit that she is unable to support the complaint or testify, citing severe stress. During the proceedings, the Assistant Attorney General’s argument was heard, while Mr. Sykas’s lawyer stated that he does not object to the request to lift immunity but expressed his concerns.
The Supreme Court unanimously decided that the offenses under investigation are serious and unrelated to the political activity of the MP. It also ruled that the Legal Service’s request is based on genuine reasons and serves the public interest.
‘All are equal before the law. Lifting immunity serves the public interest,’ stated the Court, approving the request and lifting Mr. Sykas’s immunity.
