Cyprus says goodbye to Koula Savvidou, an artist who made her mark with dedication and sincerity. She passed away today at 69, leaving behind poetic work that explored time, memory, and change.
The Press and Information Office honored her contributions in 2024, recognizing her impact on Cyprus’s culture and art history. This honor reflects the journey of a creator who approached art with integrity and humility.
Koula Savvidou studied Fine Arts at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in France (1975–1981) and started exhibiting her work in Cyprus and abroad from 1976. She took part in major international events like the Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean in Barcelona (1987), the 17th Alexandria Biennale (1991), and Mediterraneo per l’Arte Contemporanea (1989).
She held solo exhibitions mainly in Cyprus, at places like the Diaspro Art Center in Nicosia and galleries in Limassol. Recently, she joined group exhibitions such as “Till we meet again” at CVAR and “Anabasis” in Athens.
A painter and sculptor, primarily using sculpture, she worked with plaster, wood, metal, and found materials. Her art featured surrealism and mythological themes, exploring transformation, memory, motherhood, and loss. It raised timeless questions about the artist’s role in society. Her works are part of the State Gallery of Contemporary Art Cyprus and various collections in Cyprus and beyond.
