The Cypriot film ‘Smaragda – I Got Thick Skin and I Can’t Jump’, directed by Aimilios Avraam, is hitting cinemas soon. It tells a heartfelt story of self-discovery, loss, and renewal.
This dramatic comedy follows Smaragda, a 46-year-old woman who returns to Ayia Napa after her mother’s death. She seeks to rediscover herself. Facing job struggles, failed relationships, and environmental worries, she tries to find new meaning in life by working as a children’s entertainer at a tourist resort and exploring social media.
The film will be in cinemas in Nicosia and Limassol starting Thursday, April 2.
‘Smaragda’ has already enjoyed a successful festival journey. It premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2024. At the Cyprus Film Days International Festival 2025, it won the Best Cypriot Film Award and the Best Performance Award for its talented Cypriot actress.
During her journey, the heroine — played by award-winning Niovi Charalambous — faces modern contradictions. She grapples with the need for recognition and the pressure of public exposure while seeking internal change.
The production also features acclaimed creator Tonia Mishiali, known for the film ‘Pause’. Her work adds depth to contemporary Cypriot cinema. With themes of identity, loss, belonging, and change, ‘Smaragda’ reminds us that even in tough times, there’s always room for hope — a message that’s both timeless and essential.
