Cyprus is one of the ten EU countries with the highest electricity costs for households, says a report from the European Commission on natural gas and electricity markets for the second quarter of 2025.
The report shows that electricity prices in Cyprus hit 309.5 euros per megawatt-hour, or 30.9 cents per kilowatt-hour. This puts Cyprus in 10th place among EU countries.
During this time, the EU average was 246 euros per megawatt-hour. Germany had the highest price at nearly 400 euros per megawatt-hour, while Hungary had the lowest. Greece’s price was much lower than Cyprus, at 232.6 euros per megawatt-hour.
The Commission’s analysis reveals that electricity prices rose by an average of 3% across Europe, mainly due to higher taxes and network costs. There are still big differences between member states, with some seeing sharp increases and others notable decreases.
Electricity use in the EU stayed almost the same as last year, but it’s still below pre-crisis levels. Renewable sources made up 52% of the mix, while fossil fuels saw a slight increase.
The rise in electric vehicle sales was especially impressive, reaching 720 thousand in the second quarter of 2025. This accounts for nearly a quarter of the European passenger car market. In Cyprus, registrations of electric and hybrid vehicles are growing steadily, though their share is still lower compared to Northern European countries.
