Cyprus is continuing preparations for an independent anti-organised-crime structure known as the “Cyprus FBI,” with tangible developments expected soon.
According to Philenews, a person has now been selected to lead the unit, and a building has also been identified for its headquarters. The report says current YKAN commander Christos Andreou is expected to take charge, citing his track record in anti-drug operations.
The key logistical obstacle — accommodation — also appears to be moving forward. A property has reportedly been found, and purchase and fitting procedures are under way so the relevant services can be moved under one roof.
The current estimate is that the newly formed service could move into operational mode by May. The structure is expected to include, among others, YKAN and YDAP, reinforced by investigators and financial-crime specialists. Direct cooperation with MOKAS is also planned for fast asset-freezing measures in cases tied to illegal activity.
Publicly released figures indicate that coordinated narcotics cases have already led to seizures and freezes exceeding €8 million.
