Cyprus Left Honors Veteran Leader Donis Christofinis

Donis Christofinis, a highly respected figure in the Cypriot Left, is being honored by AKEL. They express deep gratitude for his long service to the Party and the people of Cyprus.

Donis Christofinis was born in Amiantos in 1928. He worked as a teacher and studied at Morphou Teachers’ College and the Moscow Institute of Social Sciences. From a young age, he joined the student and youth movement. He served as a member of the Secretariat of the International Union of Students and later spent ten years as General Secretary of EDON.

He joined AKEL in 1946 and held many important positions for decades. He was a member of the Central Committee, the Political Bureau, and the Central Secretariat, as well as President of the Party’s Central Control Committee. His work in AKEL’s international activities was significant. For 20 years, he led the Department of International Relations, connecting the Party with struggles of communist and leftist parties, along with progressive and national liberation movements. In this role, he met historical figures like Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Salvador Allende, Yasser Arafat, Nelson Mandela, and La Pasionaria.

At the same time, he played a key role in the Cypriot and international peace movement. He served as General Secretary of the Pan-Cyprian Peace Council and actively participated in the World Peace Council, Afro-Asian Solidarity Organization, and Solidarity Committee. AKEL highlights that Donis Christofinis was known for his strong belief in internationalism and peace values. His modesty and gentle character earned him universal respect.
