Cyprus’ parliament is debating a bill aimed at curbing unjustified insurance premium increases for drivers over 70.
The proposal, submitted by Volt MP Alexandra Attalides, would ban arbitrary refusals to issue motor insurance and require insurers to provide clear written reasoning when they reject applicants or end coverage.
The draft also introduces administrative fines for non-compliance, seeking to strengthen accountability and practical enforcement. The broader objective is equal access to mandatory vehicle insurance and the prevention of age-based discrimination.
Committee discussions also focused on extending the notice period before policy termination from one month to three, giving policyholders more time to challenge decisions or secure alternative coverage.
The final parliamentary vote will determine whether the measure becomes law immediately.
