The Meteorological Service is about to issue a yellow warning. Strong winds and snow in the mountains are here as we wrap up the year, but things will improve on New Year’s Day.
Cyprus will finish 2025 with a winter wonderland and wild weather. A new low-pressure system is set to hit the island soon. Meteorologist Andreas Chatzigeorgiou says the worst weather will be on New Year’s Eve.
The 4 main weather features:
- Storms & Hail: Starting the night of December 30, storms will spread across the island, especially in coastal areas. A yellow warning is expected from Tuesday night until Wednesday afternoon.
- Snow in the Mountains: Snow or sleet is likely on the peaks of Troodos on Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Wind Strengthening: On Wednesday, winds will be strong to very strong, reaching up to 6 Beaufort in some places.
- Improvement on New Year’s Day: The weather will start to clear by midday on New Year’s Day, with sunny skies lasting until Sunday.
The Temperature
Even with the bad weather, temperatures will stay normal for this time of year. During the day, expect around 14-16 degrees. At night, it will get chilly, dropping to 4 degrees inland and zero in the higher mountains.
What happened with the snow in Troodos?
In response to social media posts, Mr. Chatzigeorgiou explained that recent snowfalls were very light. There was no official record of snow cover from the Service’s stations since it melted with the morning sun.
