Sixty new families will stay in the old Pediatric Oncology Department of Makarios Hospital until the new center next to the hospital is finished.
On World Adolescent and Childhood Cancer Day, the President of the Republic of Cyprus reaffirmed the State’s commitment to invest in Education and Health. This aims to provide equal opportunities for all children. He also pointed out that the new Pediatric Oncology Clinic, funded by a generous ten million euros donation from the Cleanthous Charitable Foundation, will greatly improve care for children with cancer.
The President of the Parents and Friends of the Pediatric Oncology Ward, Louiza Stefanidou, mentioned that the new clinic should open by 2029. Until then, at least 60 new families will be accommodated in the old department, ensuring ongoing care for children who need it. Her comments respond to recent issues caused by construction at Makarios Hospital, which have affected hospitalized children’s daily lives.
The President also noted that data from the Cancer Registry for 2018-2022 shows an average of 22 new cancer cases each year in children up to 14 years old and 15 cases in those aged 15-19. This highlights the need for early diagnosis, ongoing research, and strong support for families facing these challenges.
This situation emphasizes the need for ongoing support for children with cancer and their families while showing the State’s commitment to improving services and hospitalization conditions.
