Greek media are raising big concerns about Cyprus’ readiness for emergencies. This follows an inspection of civil defense shelters across the island.
The inspection found several problems in many shelters, like poor signage, hard access, and lacking basic infrastructure. There are also worries about limited capacity in some areas. This raises doubts about how many citizens could be accommodated if needed.
As part of a journalistic mission, ERT sent Cypriot journalist Stella Stylianou to Cyprus. She highlighted one of the shelters in Limassol. However, there was little mention of the safety measures and facilities that need urgent improvement.
The app SafeCY, which helps citizens find the nearest shelter, is also being questioned. Reports say some locations on the app are hard to find or not well-prepared. The need for better organization, clear information for citizens, and upgrades to shelters is becoming a hot topic.
