The Labour Inspection Department is preparing targeted checks to prevent accidents caused by falls from height, with a primary focus on construction sites. The move follows recent serious workplace accidents, including two fatal cases.
Data presented by the authorities indicate that construction remains one of the most dangerous sectors: in 2025, construction accidents accounted for 18% of all workplace incidents. Department director Aristodimos Oikonomidis said around 5,000 inspections are carried out each year, 3,000 of them in construction.
With roughly 130,000 workplaces and 10,000 active sites across Cyprus, inspections are prioritized by risk level. Information campaigns and training programs are also continuing, with about 20,000 workers participating annually. The Safepass program remains voluntary, though mandatory implementation may be reviewed in the second half of 2026.
In enforcement terms, courts handled 42 cases over the past three years with total fines of €533,200, while 405 out-of-court fines worth €567,800 were issued, alongside 1,052 stop-work notices for serious violations.
