Continued rainfall is bringing significant inflows to Cyprus’s dams, yet the Director of the Water Development Department, Iliana Tofa-Christidou, states there is ‘no room for optimism.’
The country’s largest dam, Kouris, recorded a fill level of 21.2% — slightly higher than last year’s 20.3% for the same period. However, a significant portion of the inflows, approximately 8 million cubic meters, came through water transfer from the Arminou dam via the Southern Conveyor, which the director described as ‘our backbone.’
“We are quite restrained because we need to safeguard reserves for 2027 and 2028 as well,” she emphasized, adding that rainfall is expected to continue until March 25.
Asked about possible summer water cuts, Ms. Tofa-Christidou said this will be determined at the end of the hydrological year, in late April. Meanwhile, she called for collective effort: water savings by consumers and network repairs by water boards to reduce losses.
The Germasogeia dam recorded just 14.1% fill compared to 26.7% last year, while the Polemidia dam stands at 40%.
