It’s become a worrying trend, especially during holidays and summer breaks, for some pet owners to abandon their animals. They leave them to roam freely in public spaces all over Cyprus.
This morning, three dogs were spotted wandering along the Pediaios pedestrian path without any owner around. The dogs were chasing local cats, which scared pedestrians. Luckily, no one with a pet was nearby, preventing a more serious situation. In similar cases, these dogs often become aggressive.
While the photos taken don’t show any aggressive behavior, we can’t ignore what happened. Dogs roaming uncontrolled in public areas are a danger to both people and themselves. This also goes against the basic duty of being a responsible pet owner.
Allowing this behavior creates a dangerous and indifferent environment. The responsibility lies with the owners. They must make sure their pets aren’t a source of fear or danger in public. Vacations are not an excuse, and being careless can’t be mistaken for love for animals.
