We had a really interesting—and very human—chat with pulmonologist Dr. Eugenios Metaxas. This was part of the “B my Guest” initiative, which aims to make science more relatable and easier to understand for all of us non-experts.

This interview is part of a series where we talk to scientists, mainly in medicine but not only. We focus on sharing knowledge in simple, clear language instead of complicated terms and concepts.

What stands out about Dr. Metaxas is not just his medical knowledge. It’s something that can’t be easily taught: his human touch.

As his patient, I can say he makes you feel at ease right from the start. His straightforwardness, calmness, and sense of security come not from authority but from his ability to connect with you as a person. He talks to you as a friend, not from a ‘specialist’s pedestal.’ There’s no elitism or heavy scientific jargon—just a genuine desire to help.

Trust is perhaps the most important part of modern medicine. It’s something that must be earned. In a time when patients can find endless information online—often conflicting or wrong—the doctor’s role goes beyond just diagnosing and treating. It also involves managing information, clearing up myths, and creating a safe space for trust.

During our chat, we covered topics that impact daily life and health: from smoking and its real effects to sleep apnea—a condition many underestimate without realizing how serious it is.

We also focused on modern ‘myths’ that are widely believed, like the idea that vaping or heated tobacco products are safe alternatives. With calmness and clarity, Dr. Metaxas explains what really holds true, avoiding panic but also steering clear of overly comforting answers.

Because in the end, good information isn’t about scaring people or sugarcoating things. It’s about finding balance.

This discussion reminds us that behind science is a human being. A good doctor is not just knowledgeable but also knows how to share that knowledge in an understandable—and accepted—way.
