The case filed by journalist and author Makarios Drousiotis against the Republic of Cyprus has entered a new phase, as the European Court of Human Rights has communicated the application to the government.
According to the court document, the communication took place on February 16. The applicant alleges violations of Articles 8, 10 and 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
In his statement, Mr Drousiotis says he was targeted by unlawful surveillance using advanced spyware, including alleged intrusions into personal computers, mobile phones, cloud accounts and home security systems. He also refers to incidents of physical surveillance.
The ECHR has addressed a series of questions to both sides, including whether any interference was “in accordance with the law” and “necessary in a democratic society,” and whether effective domestic remedies were available.
Proceedings at the ECHR now continue with submissions from the parties in response to those questions.
