After 20 years of operation, ‘Thalassaki’ — one of Limassol’s most beloved cafés, located on Akti Olympion — is closing its doors. For two decades, it stood as the heart of social life along the city’s waterfront.
The café opened in 2005 following the redevelopment of Akti Olympion and was distinguished by its direct connection to the sea and affordable prices. It was a favourite haunt of winter swimmers and regulars who valued its ‘popular’ character — one of the last places in Limassol that remained financially accessible to everyone.
Monday was its final day of operation. The operators have already packed up and are preparing to hand over the premises to the Limassol Municipality, which owns the property. The decision came after a lengthy legal dispute between the Municipality and the former operator over both the use of the premises and financial disagreements.
The court issued a final ruling in favour of the Municipality, ordering the premises to be vacated. At first instance, a significant sum was also awarded for lost revenue — a decision expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court.
Limassol Municipality is currently evaluating the premises and intends to launch a new tender soon. According to reports, the new tender terms will include pricing clauses for basic products such as coffee and water. The new rent is expected to be substantially higher, reflecting the true value of one of the Municipality’s most important properties.
