The Informal Council of EU Education Ministers kicked off today in Nicosia. They are focusing on the key priorities for European education and training. The event is taking place at the ‘Filoxenia’ Conference Center, part of Cyprus’s EU Council Presidency in 2026.
The meeting is led by Athina Michailidou, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth. Education Ministers from member states are here, along with Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, the Director-General of the relevant Directorate-General of the European Commission.
The opening session features a keynote speech by Professor Michalinos Zembylas about the teaching profession today. After that, there will be working groups discussing professional development, keeping teachers in their jobs, and making teaching more appealing.
On the first day, attendees will also see presentations of artistic works and student activities as part of the Ministry of Education’s initiatives for Cyprus’s Presidency.
Tomorrow, Friday, discussions will continue in plenary. They will focus on how European cooperation contributes to education and training in the European Education Area. The meeting will wrap up with comments from political leaders and a press conference, followed by bilateral talks.
