Cyprus shows its history everywhere. You can see the marks of time in every corner—from Neolithic homes and ancient temples to medieval castles and Venetian walls. Each area tells a different story: trade, battles, religion, myths, and cultures that met in the Mediterranean.

Paphos — Myth and Archaeology by the Sea

Paphos is known as Cyprus’s archaeological treasure and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. In New Paphos, the ancient capital, Roman villas with stunning mosaics—like those of Dionysus and Theseus—stand out, showing mythological scenes in great detail.

The Tombs of the Kings, carved into solid rock, form an impressive burial site from the Hellenistic and Roman times.

In Kouklia (ancient Palaepaphos), you’ll find the important sanctuary of Aphrodite. Legend says she was born at the rock Petra tou Romiou, one of the island’s most famous spots. The Medieval Castle of Paphos overlooks the harbor, a Byzantine fortress that was strengthened later on.

Nicosia — The Heart of Historical Inland

Nicosia is not just a modern capital; it’s also surrounded by important archaeological sites. Near Politiko, you’ll find ancient Tamassos, a key Iron Age center with royal tombs and sanctuaries known for copper mining.

The ancient city-state Idalion shows early examples of administration and writing through inscriptions and tablets.

The Cyprus Museum in the city has the richest collection of antiquities in the country. Around the old city, you can see the star-shaped Venetian Walls of Nicosia, with main entrances at Famagusta Gate, Paphos Gate, and Kyrenia Gate.

Limassol — Ancient Grandeur and Medieval Fortresses

On a steep hill by the sea lies Ancient Kourion, one of Cyprus’s most stunning sites. The Greco-Roman theater still hosts performances, while Eustolios’s house has beautiful mosaics.

The sanctuary was located a bit inland. Further east, Amathus shows long-standing worship and urban life. The Kolossi Castle is a classic medieval fortress linked to Commandaria wine production.

Larnaca — From Neolithic Times to Medieval Years

Beneath modern Larnaca, you can find ancient Kition with Phoenician sanctuaries and fortifications. Nearby is the Neolithic settlement Khirokitia, a UNESCO site with circular homes and signs of prehistoric life.

The site Klavassos-Tenta is also important, while around Teke Hala Sultan, more archaeological finds from the Bronze Age keep appearing. The Medieval Castle of Larnaca, next to Phinikoudes Beach, reflects Byzantine, Frankish, and Ottoman history.

Historical Sites in Occupied Areas

The northern part of Cyprus has some of the island’s most impressive medieval and ancient monuments.

The Bella Pais Abbey is famous for its Gothic architecture and views. Ancient Salamis has a theater, baths, and grand colonnades.

The Kyrenia Castle overlooks the harbor, while St. Hilarion Castle, high in the Pentadaktylos range, is known for its dramatic location. The Bouffavento Castle, perched high up, offers stunning views and a sense of isolation.
