A woman’s report raised alarms. She said an unknown person entered a fenced area, pretending to measure electricity on a Sunday.

The woman noticed the stranger when she heard the gate open and her dog bark loudly. When she stepped outside, she saw him leaving on a scooter. When she asked what he was doing, he said he “measured the electricity” but couldn’t show any ID or proof.

An official statement was requested from the Cyprus Electricity Authority about the incident. In a call with the Authority’s spokesperson, Ms. Christina Papadopoulou, she said that electricity meter readings don’t happen on Sundays, except for replacing or installing “smart” meters.

Electricity Authority workers always carry official identification

Ms. Papadopoulou added that in such cases consumers are informed ahead of time, through a message sent days before. She stressed that Electricity Authority workers always have official ID, which they must show during visits.

She pointed out that this incident shows the need for more citizen vigilance, especially regarding home security and access to private areas. Finally, she urged everyone to be careful in similar situations and to contact the Electricity Authority or relevant authorities right away if they have doubts about someone’s identity.
