Deep mourning has descended upon Sotira following the tragic death of 19-year-old Kristina Achilleos in a car accident on Agia Thekla Road in the early hours of Wednesday.
The young woman was riding in a vehicle with three friends when, at around 1:30 a.m., the car veered off the road and crashed into the concrete wall of a water tank. Kristina Achilleos sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
A second 19-year-old passenger was seriously injured and transported to Nicosia General Hospital, where she continues to receive treatment. The 19-year-old driver and 20-year-old front passenger were initially taken to Famagusta General Hospital before being transferred to Larnaca General Hospital.
According to Famagusta Police spokesman Andreas Constantinou, all four occupants were wearing seatbelts, and the driver tested negative for both alcohol and drugs.
The Famagusta Traffic Department is investigating the cause of the accident, focusing on the speed at which the vehicle was travelling and the adverse weather conditions at the time.
