A father made a heart-wrenching plea about his young daughter at Makarios Hospital. With a trembling voice, he shared the anxiety and despair his family feels. For a month now, doctors have been unable to diagnose his 2-year-old daughter, Damiani Kapoutsou.
During the program ‘Mesimeri kai Kati,’ the father spoke about serious staff shortages. He stressed that his child remains hospitalized without a clear diagnosis. Clearly worried, he asked for help from the Ministry of Health and the public, saying time is slipping away for his child.
He noted that the main doctor is on maternity leave and hasn’t been replaced. He believes this lack of care is hurting his child. “My child has been at Makarios for a month, and they don’t know what’s wrong. My child is dying,” he said, overwhelmed, asking for his daughter to be transferred to Greece. He pointed out that the shortages at the largest pediatric hospital in the country are alarming.
The Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambous, responded during the program. He said he was not aware of this specific case but stressed that humanitarian issues are a daily concern for the Ministry of Health. He promised to look into it and provide more information.
In a broader context, the Minister also talked about capacity planning. He mentioned that its goal is to find out the real needs and shortages in public hospitals so they can take action. However, while a family worries about their child’s life, words seem insufficient compared to the urgent need for real solutions.
