A fire that broke out on Sunday morning in an area between the communities of Omodos and Mandria in the Limassol district prompted an immediate response from the Fire Service and the Department of Forests.

The blaze was detected shortly before 09:30 in wild vegetation north of Omodos. Four fire engines from rural Limassol stations rushed to the scene, backed by two additional vehicles from the Department of Forests.

Strong winds blowing through the area significantly hampered firefighting efforts. The fire spread rapidly due to large amounts of dead vegetation on the ground and low humidity.

According to Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis, the fire was contained at 2.5 hectares. Crews are now carrying out final extinguishing operations and tackling any potential flare-ups.

The cause of the fire is being investigated in cooperation with the police. Notably, meteorologists warn that this year’s fire season could prove particularly challenging due to adverse weather conditions.
