The Government decided today on nine measures to support livestock farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease, aiming at the rapid reactivation of livestock production.
Among the decisions included are the immediate payment of compensation for animal feed and animal products, income support for one year, the coverage of costs for laboratory tests and vaccines, as well as the implementation of an investment plan to upgrade the affected units. At the same time, support is provided for livestock farmers in restriction zones, along with an exemption for 2026 from rents and fees regarding livestock plots on state land or Turkish Cypriot properties.
Furthermore, a Special Scientific Committee will be established under the leadership of Stavros Malas, which will submit proposals within three months for the development of a more resilient and modern livestock farming model. It should be pointed out that two additional livestock units in Dali and Geri were found with animals testing positive for foot-and-mouth disease, a fact that underscores the need for immediate and targeted support. These are two livestock units housing a total of 1,700 animals, which will be culled in the coming hours.
