With an eye already on a difficult summer, Cyprus’ Ministry of Defence moved today to reinforce the 2026 wildfire season. An agreement was signed for the lease of four firefighting helicopters that will boost the republic’s operational capacity.
The deal was signed with the Slovak company HELI COMPANY and covers Black Hawk helicopters. The agreement was signed on behalf of the ministry by Defence Director Panayiotis Symeou, while the company was represented by CEO Dzurus Josef.
Officials say the aim is to strengthen readiness both for the prevention and suppression of forest fires at a time when civil protection demands are increasing.
The contract covers the period from April 1 to October 31, 2026. It also includes a provision for a further 30-day extension if this is deemed operationally necessary.
The Ministry of Defence says it is continuing to take measures to improve preparedness and the effective management of fires, with the goal of protecting human life and the natural environment.
