Concern is growing in the free district of Famagusta over a case that keeps returning in violent fashion. In the early hours of Thursday, an unknown gunman opened fire on two homes in Ayia Napa while people were inside, though fortunately no one was injured.
Police said the shots were fired at around 2 a.m. at the homes of a 67-year-old and a 60-year-old man located on the same street. Investigators found that three shots hit one house and four the other, causing damage to the masonry.
Authorities believe the real target behind the criminal acts is a businessman active in Ayia Napa. The investigation is focused both on identifying the perpetrators and on the professional and financial disputes in which the businessman is reportedly involved.
The case is seen as especially serious because it is believed to be the fourth criminal incident linked to the same family or circle of people in just a few months. It follows an earlier shooting at another relative’s home, as well as two separate incidents involving warnings about a grenade and an explosive device at a property belonging to the same businessman.
Investigators also see the businessman’s cooperation as crucial to the case, as he is currently abroad and is expected to be approached again for a statement when he returns.
