Nvidia’s recently released GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card failed to take the top spot in PassMark’s GPU performance tests, falling behind the GeForce RTX 4090, which continues to hold the spot with a score of 27,275 operations per second. The RTX 5090, tested on just 13 instances, shows an average score that probably won’t change significantly and is 18% behind the RTX 4090. At the same time, the RTX 5090 is only slightly ahead of the RTX 4080, showing a 9.3% advantage.
The situation with the GeForce RTX 5080 also raises questions. The average score of this card is 19,250 OPS based on 111 tests, which puts it on par with the RTX 4070 Ti, which is only 2.7% behind. The RTX 4080, on the other hand, shows a 9.8% advantage over the RTX 5080. These results are surprising, especially considering that the new GeForce 50 series graphics cards utilize the PCIe 5.0 x16 interface, which offers higher data transfer rates (32 GT/s) compared to PCIe 4.0 x16 (16 GT/s) used in the GeForce 40 series.
The comparison charts show that the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 scores are lower than their predecessors, which may indicate that PassMark has not yet updated its charts. In the worst case scenario, the RTX 4090 could increase its lead to 22.5% over the RTX 5090 and the RTX 4080 could increase its lead to 11.6% over the RTX 5080. The difference between the RTX 5080 and RTX 4070 Ti is minimal, at just 57 OPS, equivalent to a new card advantage of just 0.3%.
This data emphasizes that despite new technologies and interfaces, performance does not always meet expectations.
