The Water Development Department is changing how water resources are managed. They will slowly stop supplying water from dams to golf courses to help with drought conditions.
Following the Ministry of Agriculture’s instructions, the department has informed all golf course owners. They also held meetings with the two courses that get water from the Paphos irrigation system. The supply from the Asprokremmos dam will end by May 2026. The amount used is quite small — less than 3% of what’s available for farming — with about 150,000 cubic meters left until then.
The government policy says golf courses should use recycled water from wastewater treatment plants. This is already happening in three developments. This change is also a requirement in urban planning permits.
In some cases, water comes from the Ezousa aquifer, either through the Major Irrigation Project of Paphos or boreholes. In Limassol, Limassol Greens uses reclaimed water from the local sewage system.
For Aphrodite Hills and Columbia Secret Valley, it’s noted that due to lower dam reserves, water supply from the Major Irrigation Project will stop. They need to find other irrigation solutions. Right now, their main source is still the Asprokremmos dam.
