Google has launched a new generation of smart glasses with artificial intelligence. This marks the company’s return to the market with a more thoughtful approach. They are planning two series for 2026: one with augmented reality displays and another focused on audio features. Partners like Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster are part of this project, but the final products aren’t ready yet.
This announcement comes as competition heats up in the AI & AR wearables market. Meta is already ahead with Ray-Ban Meta, while Snap and Apple are working on their own products. Google wants to learn from the past mistakes of Google Glass by creating devices that look like regular glasses. They will use smartphones for processing, keeping them lightweight and stylish.
In a recent demo in New York, Google showed off prototypes with one or two screens. These support AR overlays for navigation, real-time translations, photo enhancements via Gemini, and voice control. The new Android XR operating system powers all these devices.
One exciting project is Project Aura, a partnership with Xreal for a pair of XR glasses that run on Android. They are similar to Samsung’s Galaxy XR but lighter. They offer a 70-degree field of view and are controlled by camera and hand movements, connecting to an external battery.
Google also revealed big upgrades for the Galaxy XR. There’s a travel mode for cars and airplanes, a new PC Connect app for linking with Windows PCs—great for gaming—and new realistic ‘Likeness’ avatars based on facial scanning that capture expressions accurately.
This overall strategy shows that Google is seriously investing in AI and XR wearables. They aim to secure a strong position in a market expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.
