Specifically, he said:
“At 31, I started coaching school to get my diploma and complete the necessary courses to start coaching as soon as I retired. Initially, I coached the second team and then moved up to the first team at Beerschot. The school is very demanding, four years with in-person classes, so I had to balance the program with my career as a player. I didn’t want a break; I wanted to practice to transition from player to coach as quickly as possible.”
On whether working in South America is an option:
“My priority is to work in Europe, but I’ve never closed the door on South America. Who knows, maybe this opportunity will arise in the future. Today, with the competitiveness there, having completed my football career and coaching studies here, I hope to continue working in this part of the world.”
On coaches who impress him:
“In Argentina, apart from his most recent period, I’ve always liked Gallardo. The intensity of his teams, their directness… Domínguez at Estudiantes is remarkable because Argentine football is very difficult and he has achieved many good results with different clubs, like Colón and Huracán, where he reached Copa Sudamericana finals. Ideally, I would combine Simeone’s defensive organization with Bielsa’s intensity and dynamism. Among foreign coaches, Jürgen Klopp and Julian Nagelsmann, and at club level Gian Piero Gasperini, now at Roma and formerly of Atalanta. I identify a lot with him; he likes high pressing, direct play, not possession football. For me, the important thing is analyzing how many chances you created afterward, how many shots on goal you had… I prefer this style of creating opportunities rather than lots of possession with horizontal passes without depth.”
On the differences in coaching today compared to when he was a player: “It’s almost another world compared to when I started playing, almost another sport.”
