The Ministry of Interior wants a review of decisions about personal scales and transfers in Limassol Municipality. This follows findings of actions that go against the law.
Antonis Economides, the Director of Local Government, said the Municipal Council discussed this issue after a meeting with the Mayor. They aim to follow the Ministry’s guidelines.
He mentioned that some decisions seem to have already been canceled, while others are being looked at during the revised municipal budget review.
During the budget audit, they found cases of excess spending. This includes promotions, raises, and personal arrangements not allowed by law. There were also transfers made without legal backing and new positions created without enough justification.
Mr. Economides pointed out that similar issues were seen in other municipalities. He stressed that local government must follow the rules.
Lastly, he reminded everyone that wage costs should stay within limits. They should not go over 40% of budgets. Municipalities need to be careful with new hires and upgrades.
