A joint unit by the Ministry of Justice and the Deputy Ministry of Migration is being set up immediately to process cases of irregular migrants who refuse to leave Cyprus voluntarily.
The decision followed a coordination meeting attended by the two ministers and relevant service officials. The aim is to speed up procedures where appeals have already been examined and rejected by the courts.
Authorities note that some individuals remain in the country even after detention and deportation orders and after legal avenues have been exhausted. Under existing law, compulsory return is possible when the country of origin accepts repatriation.
The new structure will operate as a coordination mechanism between the two ministries, reviewing each case separately and focusing on full compliance with legal procedures and EU obligations.
